My friend Kate and I are doing a thirty day drawing challenge, wherein the participants draw one specific thing each day. Be warned, I cannot draw, but it seemed fun, so I'll be posting the drawings here. Day 1 was a self-portrait:
(I know it doesn't look like me.)
In other news, basically nothing. I read The Phantom of the Opera yesterday. It was very good. In the preface it talked about Gaston Leroux, the author, and he seems to have been a sort of detective journalist before turning to fiction. Fascinating.
A note on reading prefaces: When reading classic literature, it's best to read them after finishing the book. This is because, it being classic literature, the preface writer assumes you already know the plot inside and out. But if you don't, it can be infuriating to read "...and of course one of the most profound and heartbreaking moments is when, reunited with his dear lover at last, she tells him they cannot marry." That's a huge spoiler for someone who hasn't even started reading! (By the way, I just made that up, so don't worry.)
Translator's notes, though, are usually fine. They all say the same thing anyway. "It is difficult to bring new life to [author]'s timeless words, but I have done what I judge to be the best job possible and in all circumstances possible adhered to his/her original intentions."
