I was really creeped out to find that this poem is apparently now nonexistent on my blog... even though it had four comments on it which are in the comments history. Well, here it is again. I actually won an award for it (and a few other poems) this week.

Bachwards

Dear Mr. Bach: Please tell me why
In heaven’s name you had to die.
The world’s a stage, as Shakespeare said;
And that’s quite nice, but now you’re dead.
Though nowadays, you’re well-known still.
Please read this letter, if you will.

The world’s been long without your face.
It’s now a very different place.
This might seem a bit effete:
The harpsichord’s now obsolete!
And though it’s odd, believe me, please:
Flutes and oboes now have keys.
Good counterpoint is nearly dead;
We have a thing called “pop” instead.
Your music’s referenced on the street
By those who wish to sound élite.
Most do not appreciate it
Let alone wish to debate it.
There are those of us, it’s true—
But far between and very few.
Our culture has deteriorated
To the point that it’s deflated.

All the things you’ve got, we lack;
Dear Mr. Bach, will you come back?

    1. Thanks! Yep. (I really do love Bach. His music, that is.)

    2. Yes, "classical" meaning everything from Telemann to Shostakovich just as "education" means Pre-K to graduate school. It's not really all education.
