The Indifference Club

When people portray kids going back to school, they either seem to depict enthusiastic, chipper youngsters who can't wait to get back to school or their polar opposite, those who wish summer would never end and drag their feet (and backpacks) as they finally have to enter the dreaded doors. I find that many people (myself included) have no feelings either way about school starting. Another day, another year. Ninth grade. Yaaaaay.
After a whole day of being told expectations and rules (which all seems to dissolve into blah-de-blah after a while) I still have formed no definite opinion about this school year. It will evidently be quite similar to other school years. Even though it is Ninth Grade, the Coolest Year Even Though You Have to Work Really Hard. Usually I disapprove of unnecessary, excessive capitalization, but that merits special recognition because it is what we have been told over and over again. Over and over.
We are supposed to "get involved," but not to "be overwhelmed with extracurricular activities." We are supposed to "have fun," but also to "focus on schoolwork and put a lot of time into it." We are supposed to "work hard," but also "give ourselves a break." It's clear that we live in a world of many contradictions.
